Chapter 4

I opened the car door and slid into the back with Gato. When I turned to him, he hooked his massive head over my shoulder in a hug. I drew in a shuddering breath. ‘I stabbed her,’ I explained quietly to him and Nate. ‘And then Wilf turned her. She’s going to live. As a wolf.’

I met Nate’s eyes in the rear-view mirror. He could feel the horror and self-doubt churning through me. ‘You saved her,’ he reassured me.

‘Maybe. But I also condemned her to be a werewolf without talking to her about it. She’s going to be pissed.’

‘Better pissed than dead.’ Nate started the car. ‘Home?’ he asked.

I hadn’t been home in nearly four weeks. ‘Lucy’s,’ I said finally. ‘I need to shower and I need to sleep.’

Lucy hadn’t given Nate permission to enter her home, so he couldn’t come in. I needed some support right now but I was lousy at asking for it. Gato would do. I’d cried on him many a time. For now I needed my composure because I had another call to make.

‘Hello?’ Lucy’s mum answered straight away.

‘Hi, Sandy. It’s Jinx.’

‘Jinx, what the hell is going on?’ Her voice was laced with anger and fear, and I felt responsible for both.

‘I’m sorry, the Hoppas Centre called about a room just after you left. We contacted them as soon as we knew Lucy was sick but they didn’t have a place on the programme. A slot opened, and Lucy had already signed the forms giving them permission to collect her if there was a vacancy. I’ve had a call. She’s been having treatment on the plane, and they said she’s responding well.’

‘She’s responding to it?’ Sandy asked, her voice trembling. Her hopeful tone was painful.

‘Yes. We’ll know more soon. Go to bed, Sandy. I’ll call when I hear from them again.’

Lucy’s mum was exhausted, and it didn’t occur to her to query why I was the Hoppas Centre’s contact, nor what this miracle treatment was. She was probably too tired – and too hopeful.

We said our goodbyes and rang off. I was shattered and I fought to stay awake in the car. I dimly heard Nate on the phone. ‘She needs you.’ Then I was out for the count.

I opened my eyes blearily as I was carried out of the car. Emory was carrying me. He smelled entirely too good. ‘Hey,’ I managed.

His gaze sharpened before a soft smile lit his face. ‘Hey, sleepyhead. Let’s get you cleaned up.’

Nate opened Lucy’s front door with the key and then went back to my car to settle in for the night. Sometimes being a vampyr sucked. Immortal life, super speed, healing spit … but shitty accommodation when you couldn’t get permission to go inside a house.

Emory carried me in, cradling me all the way upstairs to the bedroom I used when I stayed at Lucy’s. He started to unbutton my shirt.

‘Hey!’ I objected, stilling his hands. ‘I can do this bit.’ I was blushing. It felt like it was a lifetime ago that Emory and I had got hot and heavy in the back of a limousine.
